Qualitative clay mineralogy of the Middle and Upper Eocene in north-western Belgium OMA
Jacobs, P.; De Coninck, F..
Detailed chemical and X-ray analysis of representative clay fraction samples from the Maldegem and Zelzate Formations (Middle and Upper Eocene) in western Belgium reveal a rather constant clay mineralogy, consisting mainly of kaolinite, smectitic minerals (of the nontronite type) and illite. Glauconite occurs in two different forms, the coarser grained being better crystallized. Local climatic or landscape conditions as inferred from the qualitative clay mineralogical suite point towards a shallow marine sedimentary environment in transgressive phase. A low relief restricted drainage area delivered kaolinite to the basin under moderate weathering conditions, transforming volcanic ash layers into smectites.

<i>Artemia</i> in aquatic toxicology: a review OMA
Persoone, G.; Wells, P.G..
Due to commercial availability of dried cysts from which live test material can be hatched at will, <i>Artemia</i> is used extensively in research and applied toxicology.Despite the extensive literature on dose-effect relationships of chemicals on brine shrimp, it was not until 1980 that an experimental protocol was developed for a simple acute toxicity test with <i>Artemia</i> nauplii, meeting the prerequisites for standardization. The reliability and accuracy of this short-term test were determined during an intercalibration exercise involving 80 laboratories and were found to be quite satisfactory. Consequently, the so-called ARC-test, which is one of the very few standardized marine toxicity tests, is now used routinely at the...

The effect of different levels and sources of dietary phosphatidylcholine on the growth, survival, stress resistance, and fatty acid composition of postlarval <i>Penaeus vannamei</i> OMA
Coutteau, P.; Camara, M.R.; Sorgeloos, P..
The effect of dietary purified phosphatidylcholine (PC) was evaluated on growth, survival, resistance to osmotic shock, and fatty acid composition of early postlarval <i>Penaeus vannamei</i> (0.3 mg initial dry weight) fed semi-purified diets. PC sources used were purified soybean PC (SPC, 95% purity), chicken-egg PC (ECP, 94% purity), and de-oiled soybean lecithin (DSL, 23% PC). The growth response of shrimp fed 1.5% of SPC or 6.5% of DSL was significantly greater than that of shrimp fed a PC-deficient diet, whereas no effect was observed either on survival or stress resistance. Further increasing the dietary level of soybean PC from 1.5% to 3.3% resulted in a significant decrease of the shrimp weight gain. Shrimp receiving 1.5% of PC,...

Determination of protein-bound copper and zinc in some organs of the cuttlefish <i>Sepia officinalis</i> L OMA
Decleir, W.; Vlaeminck, A.; Geladi, P.; Van Grieken, R..
1. The copper, zinc and iron content of blood and water soluble extracts from several organs of <i>Sepia officinalis</i> L. have been determined with atomic absorption spectrometry. 2. The relatively high concentration of copper and zinc in the branchial gland points to its probable role in trace element metabolism. 3. After gel filtration a low molecular weight copper and zinc containing fraction can be isolated from the gland. 4. A possible role of this fraction in hemocyanin biosynthesis is postulated.

Contribution à l'étude du plankton dans le port d'Ostende OMA
De Pauw, N..
Resuming our proper observations and taking in account the collected data in the literature we can conclude that: (1) diatoms and copepods are the principal components of the Oostende plankton; (2) concentration of zoo- and phytoplankton is highest in summer and autumn; (3) there is a physico-chemical and biological gradient between the front and rear of the port. The gradation is decreasing for salinity, oxygen concentration, pH, number of marine species and the total biomass. The gradient is increasing for temperature and freshwater organisms; (4) several observed species are new to the Belgian coast: 4 copepods, 5 ciliophores, 1 cumacean and 2 diatoms; (5) although the number of species typical for a port is small, several species (observed in large...

Deposition of atmospheric trace elements into the North Sea: coastal, ship, platform measurements and model predictions OMA
Injuk, J.; Van Grieken, R.; De Leeuw, G..
The atmospheric input of up to 16 trace and other elements into the North Sea is further assessed from aerosol concentrations measured at a coastal station in Belgium, on ships during two cruises, and on a platform, in the years 1992-1994. The Slinn and Slinn model is used to calculate the dry deposition from the measured aerosol concentrations. The total (dry and wet) deposition into the North Sea environment is estimated to be (in tonnes per year): 560 for V, 1300 for Cr, 650 for Ni, 690 for Cu, 3500 for Zn and 1970 for Pb. The 'giant' particles dominate the fluxes. The atmospheric contribution to the total input into the North Sea, including riverine inputs and direct discharges, are estimated to be 28% for Cu, 29% for Zn and 57% for Pb. The inputs...

Influence of temperature on the reproductive potential of two brackish-water harpacticoids (Crustacea: Copepoda) OMA
Heip, C.H.R.; Smol, N..
The reproductive potential of two harpacticoid copepods, <i>Tachidius discipes</i> and <i>Paronychocamptus nanus</i>, as measured by the intrinsic rate of natural increase, rm, has been studied. The influence of temperature on all factors used in the calculation of rm has been taken into account. Generation time, which has also been detected in a third species, <i>Nitocra typica</i>, is the single factor which is most affected by temperature and which has the most pronounced effect on rm. Values of the reproductive potential differ considerably according to temperature, and thus to the time of the year; during the spring bloom more than half the...

The succession of benthic micrometazoans in a brackish water habitat OMA
Heip, C.H.R..
During the investigation of a shallow brackish water pond in northern Belgium, attention was paid to the quantitative occurrence of several micro-metazoan groups of the benthos: hydrozoa, oligochaeta, nematoda, copepoda and ostracoda. These groups show a succession in time, each group having a different moment of maximum abundance.

Etude des migrations nycthémérales du zooplankton dans un milieu marin peu profond OMA
Daro, M.H..
The Sluice-dock of Ostend, a shallow (1.5 m) marine biotope of 86 ha stays closed during some 6-7 months of the year and is not influenced by the tides. During 24 h cycles the nycthemeral migrations of the zooplankton at 5 depths in a watercolumn of 1 meter were studied in relation to several environmental factors: water temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH and chlorophyll content. The photosynthesis shows a minimum during the night and shows a maximum during the late afternoon, at which time the water-temperature is also maximal. Holo- and meroplanktonic organisms migrate towards the surface around 3-5 o'clock a.m., at which time the chlorophyll content is minimal, hence our hypothesis of nocturnal grazing, this phenomenon perhaps combined with a nocturnal...

The Sluice-dock at Ostend OMA
Polk, P..
The sluice-dock at Ostend is an artificial lagoon (1.5 m deep and with an area of 86 ha) connected to the harbour of Ostend and the North Sea by sluices (vannes). At low tides, during spring tide, the whole dock can be emptied, washing out the planktonic biomass. As an oyster culture exists in this biotope, applied and fundamental research is done. Planktonic larvae of oyster predators can be eliminated from the biotope by washing out the whole water volume during their bloom and replacing it by new sea-water. The oyster pest <i>Crepidula fornicata</i> (introduced with oyster spatfall from the Netherlands and reproducing heavily in the sluice-dock, otherwise not occurring along the Belgian coast) is controlled in this way (before: 15,746...

Het 'bijzondere' van de Schelde: de abiotiek van het Schelde-estuarium OMA
Van Damme, S.; De Winder, B.; Ysebaert, T.J.; Meire, P..
The Scheldt estuary is a vast ecosystem in which powerful natural forces prevail. Tidal action is a key element in the functioning of the estuary. The combination of tide and discharge results in a salinity gradient that is characterized by strong variations in the brackish part. The estuary is a highly turbidsystem. The load of suspended solids is determined by acomplex mix of factors. The dynamic interactions of the physicochemical and morphological parameters lead to a range of various habitats, with highly fluctuating conditions. This, together with the very heavy human impact, both morphological and chemical makes the estuary a very stressed environment in which the survival of plants and animals requires special adaptations.

International study on <i>Artemia</i> : 17. Energy consumption in cysts and early larval stages of various geographical strains of <i>Artemia</i> OMA
Vanhaecke, P.; Lavens, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
Variations in dry weight, caloric content and ash content during cyst hatching and early larval development have been studied for various geographical strains of <i>Artemia</i> . In general, decapsulated cysts contain 30 to 40% more energy than freshly hatched nauplii; for Chaplin Lake and Buenos Aires <i>Artemia</i> this difference amounts to 57%. Ash contents increase as decapsulated cysts hatch into instar I and molt into instar II-III nauplii. Over a 24h larval developmental period individual dry weights and energy content of the nauplii decrease with 16-34% and 22-37% respectively.A small but significant correlation exists between the survival rate of starved nauplii and either the energy content of instar I and instar II-III...

Improvements in the decapsulation of <i>Artemia</i> cysts OMA
Bruggeman, E.; Baeza-Mesa, M.; Bossuyt, E.; Sorgeloos, P..
As described in our previous paper (Sorgeloos et al. , 1977) hypochlorite can be used as reactive agent to dissolve the lipoproteic chorion of <i>Artemia</i> cysts. Two commercial products are available worldwide, i.e. bleaching powder, chloride of lime Ca(OCL)2 and bleaching water NaOCl solutions. In Western Europe the latter product is the cheapest, whereas in the USA and Southeast Asia bleaching powder should be considered. Because the decapsulation process is a much more critical operation with bleaching powder, especially with regard to the viability of the embryos (Bruggeman et al., in preparation; Manzi, personal communication), we studied the use of technical NaOCl solutions in detail.

Nematode assemblages of deep-sea and shelf break sites in the North Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea OMA
Soetaert, K.; Heip, C.H.R..
The nematode community structure of several shelf break and deep-sea stations in the North Atlantic and the Mediterranean is compared using data from the literature. Samples from 2 Mediterranean deep-sea canyons have a unique fauna of predatory and scavenging nematodes (e.g. <i>Synonchiella, Halichoanolaimus, Gammanema</i>) which comprise some 20 to 30% of the community, while some of the typical deep-sea genera (<i>Theristus, Acantholaimus</i>) are only marginally present. The nematode generic composition of the other sites reveals a gentle transition from the shelf break (Bay of Biscay; Mediterranean) over the slope (Mediterranean) towards the continental rise, abyssal plain and hadal depths (Bay of Biscay, Puerto Rico Trench,...
